Welcome to Marshfield, Mo., home to the inventor of the Hubble Telescope, and the longest running Independence Day parade west of the Mississippi river. If you are traveling down Interstate 44, Marshfield is located at the No. 100 exit. Driving down Historic Route 66 will lead you through the heart of our city.
Marshfield Mo. was settled in 1830, and a survey of the town was commenced June 21, 1856. Webster County was established on March 3, 1855, from parts of Greene and Wright Counties and was named in honor of Daniel Webster. Marshfield's elevation is 1,493 feet and is referred to as “Top of the Ozarks,” the highest point on Route 66.
With Webster County straddling the divide between the Missouri and Arkansas rivers, and due to its altitude, the rain that falls on Marshfield flows into four different headwaters: the James, Niangua, Gasconade and Pomme De Terre rivers. A part of the 1808 Osage Indian land cession, the county was settled in the early 1830s by pioneers from Kentucky and Tennessee. An Indian trail crossed southern Webster County, and many prehistoric mounds are in the area.
Webster County is one of 114 counties in Missouri. It is in the Central Standard time zone and the latitude of Marshfield is 37.338N. The longitude is -92.906W.
Marshfield Mo. is centrally located from large cities such as Kansas City and St. Louis, as well as having the convenience of Springfield only twenty minutes away. If you are an avid outdoorsman, we have two large conservation areas just outside of the Marshfield’ Mo. city limits: the Black Horse Conservation Area, located north of town on Brinkley Road, and Compton Hollow Conservation Area, located south of town off State Highway KK. Marshfield Mo. is about an hour’s drive to enjoying seven different lakes: Pomme De Terre, Truman, Stockton, Lake of the Ozarks, Bull Shoals, Table Rock and Taneycomo.
Marshfield Mo. suffered many losses through fires in 1920 and 1921, but the most destruction came from the tornado on April 18, 1880, that hit at approximately 6 p.m. The tornado of 1880 cleared everything in its path, killing and wounding many and igniting fires that alerted the people on a passenger train that Marshfield had suffered a great tragedy. Telegraph poles were gone or badly twisted, trees uprooted and Marshfield’s homes and businesses lay in ruin. Because of this horrific disaster, the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway brought help from nearby towns and as far away as Rolla in the form of physicians, nurses and those willing to help to search the rubble for possible survivors. Today, Marshfield continues to grow. We have seen the damage from tornadoes as they have swept through our county and as it was in 1880, friends, neighbors, and even strangers come to help and pick up the pieces of scattered lives affected by these powerful storms.
Marshfield Mo. has been honored twice by presidential visits. President Harry S Truman visited Marshfield in 1948, and President George H. W. Bush and his First Lady, Barbara Bush, participated in the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce Independence Day Parade and celebration around our square on July 4, 1991.
It is said with pride that Marshfield Mo. has the longest running Independence Day Parade west of the Mississippi. The first Independence Day Parade took place on July 4, 1879. The earlier celebrations were held in a grove just north of town, with families traveling in buggies, wagons or on horseback to enjoy the day with family, friends and neighbors. People would gather together clearing the underbrush and smoothing the grounds to make way for stands selling lemonade, soda pop, popcorn, crackerjacks and candy. Wood was hauled to the backside of the property, where a huge pit was dug out to get ready for roasting beef, pork and chicken. They began roasting the meat early in the evening on the night before the 4th of July. Although there have been many changes since those early celebrations, family, friends and neighbors still travel to Marshfield to enjoy the Independence Day Parade, eat a corn dog or a sandwich from one of the many food vendors, and have an ice cold lemonade or soda pop.
Marshfield Mo. is a community that strives to provide many activities throughout the year, including: the Cherry Blossom Festival, Children's Easter Egg Hunt, Fiber Fair, Marshfield Chamber of Commerce Independence Day Celebration &fireworks on the Fourth of July, Marshfield Chamber of Commerce & IPRA/ACRA sanctioned Rodeo, Marshfield Chamber of Commerce "Marshfield Classic" Golf Tournament, Webster County Fair, performances by the Marshfield Performing Arts Society, truck and tractor pulls, ATV rodeo, Demolition Derby, Pow Wow, Equine Events, Boots, Bands & BBQ, corn maze and pumpkin patch, Christmas Parade and events and much, much more!
A few years ago, Marshfield Mo. was designated a “Tree City.” Many people donated their time and energy planting more than 3,500 trees that can be enjoyed in our many parks, schools, businesses and homes throughout the Marshfield Mo. area.
On Feb. 3, 2010, Webster County, Mo., was designated by the Department of Economic development as an Enhanced Enterprise Zone.

Marshfield, Mo., is known for being the birthplace to Edwin Powell Hubble. Edwin P. Hubble was born Nov. 20, 1889, in Marshfield. He was one of the leading astronomers in the twentieth century, studying 46 galaxies in our vast universe. NASA launched the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990.
The late Bill Buegsen believed that others should know the famous astronomer was born here, so he started working to design a one-fourth replica of the original Hubble Space Telescope. Bill went on to help establish Marshfield’s Tourist Information Center to work with the Chamber of Commerce to bring tourism to our area.
The Hubble Telescope replica was dedicated on July 4, 1994, and is located on Clay Street on the west side of the Webster County Courthouse in Marshfield. It took approximately three months to build, is approximately 12 feet long, 10 feet wide and weighs 1,200 pounds.
Today one of our elementary schools is named after the famous astronomer and is known as “Hubble Elementary.” A mural just off the square at Clay and Washington streets also gives honor to Edwin P. Hubble by including it in the painting, and in 2004, a portion of Interstate 44 between Northview and Marshfield became known as “The Edwin P. Hubble Highway.”
Annual Meeting
Each year in January the Maarshfield Chamber of Commerce holds our annual meeting and banquet. We utilize this meeting to elect and re-elect board members, elect officers, and award local businesses and residents with awards including:

Independence Day Celebration & Rodeo
Marshfield Mo. is home to the longest running Independence Day Parade west of the Mississippi. Twice we have been honored by Presidential visits including President Harry S. Truman in 1948 and President George H. W. Bush and First Lady, Barbara Bush in 1991.
In the midst of hosting this celebration the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce holds our annual Independence Day Rodeo and Fireworks display on the days leading up to and including the 4th of July. In 2011 the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce Independence Day Rodeo attracted bull riders from Alaska to Florida to participate in our Rodeo. In 2012 the IPRA awarded the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce Independence Day Rodeo as the best new rodeo of the year.
Marshfield Classic Golf Tournament
The "Marshfield Classic" hosted by the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce is a 2 man scramble golf tournament held annually at the Marshfield Country Club. This event has become one of the premier tournaments in southwest Missouri for golf enthusiasts.
The format for this tournament is unlike anything you will have played before with 11 par 3 holes with closest to the pin prizes on each hole and the always poplular "Par 3 Challenge" on 18 which awards the top 3 finalists in the shootout. The tournament overall pays out 4 places in 4 flights. In 2011 we had 83 teams participate.
Christmas Parade & Activities
Each year around the Christmas holiday the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Christmas Parade and Childrens Christmas Store. The Christmas store, started by Pam Cook, gives children who may not otherwise have the ability, to purchase gifts for their family and close friends. In 2011 the newly formed Kiwanis club took control over hosting the Childrens Christmas Store. The Marshfield Chamber of Commerce continues to support this cause financially and with volunteer support.
